Our face is the part of ourselves we show the world, and our skin protects us from harm; when your skin is sagging, it may affect your emotional state, and it may be physically irritating. Sagging skin is not just a sign of age—it can happen prematurely from rapid weight loss; as a result of smoking or sun exposure; or from stress. You don’t have to buy expensive skin care products to clean and clear your complexion; many skin care remedies can be made at home. Here are 10 home remedies for sagging skin.
1. Cucumber & avocado mask
Cucumber is widely used in the cosmetic industry for its anti-aging properties. When applied to the surface of skin, it tightens pores and nourishes the derma; it’s a good exfoliator, removing dead skin cells. Avocado is a good moisturizer; when these two join forces, a powerful remedy for sagging skin is the result. Blend together a cup of finely chopped avocado with another cup of finely chopped cucumber; let this mask sit on your skin for half an hour. Wash it off thoroughly with lukewarm water. This treatment can be performed weekly for regular skin tightening.
Note: Before applying any of these facial treatments, lay a hot, damp or wet towel over your face to warm the skin and open the pores, so the treatment can penetrate more easily. After the treatment, splash on a natural toner like rose water, then apply a light moisturizer to help reinforce the face mask’s firming effects.
2. Oatmeal and buttermilk
Oats are an excellent treatment for skin trouble; they draw out toxins, relieving eczema and rashes. To make a soothing mask, blend a quarter cup of buttermilk with a half-cup of cooked oats, and apply the mix to your face. Let it sit for fifteen to twenty minutes.
3. Yogurt and honey
Rich in protein and vitamin D (and other nutrients that aid the skin), yogurt makes a good facemask. Choose a plain organic yogurt, with no added sugar (which can dry the skin); about a half cup is enough for a treatment. Add some honey to make the mask more moisturizing—honey draws moisture from the atmosphere. This mask is especially good at tightening wrinkles.
4. Almond oil
Massaging your face with a dab of almond oil every day will moisturize pores and cells, gradually pulling up and tightening the skin. Vitamin E oil is a good choice for reducing the signs of scars, and quieting itchy, dry skin. But stay away from oils if your skin is at all oily; even natural oils may clog pores.
5. Cinnamon & turmeric
Cinnamon accelerates collagen production, helping skin stay firm. You can make an exfoliating scrub with cinnamon powder and tumeric powder (1/2 tsp each), sugar (1 tsp) and olive oil (1/4 cup). Scrub this mixture upwards over your face, and rinse with cold water.
Another treatment to try at home is a face pack, to firm saggy skin and impart a healthy glow. Combine a mashed ripe banana, one tablespoon of honey, and one teaspoon of olive oil. Leave the pack on for fifteen to twenty minutes, then wipe it off and wash with warm water. This treatment traps moisture inside, lifts tired skin, and regulates sebum production (oil that protects the derma).
7. Egg white & thyme
Egg whites have been used to treat sagging skin for centuries; the protein in egg whites stimulates the production of collagen. Combine four egg whites with a dropperful of thyme oil to make a rehydrating mask that lifts sagging skin.
8. Fresh tomato juice
Eating fresh tomatoes helps cleanse your body of potentially cancerous free radicals—applying fresh tomato juice to the skin tightens it up. Squeeze or juice a fresh tomato, then rub the juice into your skin in an upwards, circular motion, for about five minutes. Follow with a coldwater rinse. Tomato juice reduces pores and brightens skin.
9. Sandalwoood paste
A native of India, the sandalwood tree offers many benefits to the skin. Sandalwood paste—which you can make by rubbing a tick against a rough surface, and adding water—will clear away acne, dry spots, oily skin, and excess sweat. The paste is exfoliating, and leaves a healthy glow afterwards.
This last offering is simple, age-old, and effective; drink lots of water. The more water cells get, the more elastic they become. Dehydration means a loss of elasticity to the skin, and the result is sagging. Drinking eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day also aids the liver in flushing out toxins, which also results in a clearer complexion.
